The M4 Sherman (Medium Tank, M4) served as America's primary medium tank throughout World War II. British forces designated it the M4 General Sherman, named after General William Sherman. Built on the M3 Lee chassis with a modified turret mounting a 75mm gun, this design enabled rapid transition from prototype to mass production. From February 1942 through the war's conclusion, manufacturers produced approximately 49,000 variants. The tank saw service with American, British, Polish, French, and Soviet armies. Specialized versions included the amphibious Sherman DD (Duplex Drive), the Sherman Crab for mine detection, and the Sherman Dozer equipped with a front blade for engineering operations. Production commenced in 1942, with all M3 Lee manufacturing facilities converting to M4 output by July. British forces first deployed the tank in combat at El Alamein (252 units). From 1943 onward, the M4 became the standard medium tank for Western Allied operations.
